The Rock Educational Support Services - RESS

The Rock Educational Support Services was birthed in 2008 when Rev. Agard and his wife, Sis. Kate, were impressed of the Lord to provide additional support for the academic advancement of the children and families of the Morvant community. It involves a scholarship that is awarded based on academic performance and which may be used for the purchase of anything related to pupils’ studies, for example, textbooks and stationery. There are currently 19 students receiving the RESS scholarship.

Students attain eligibility for the scholarship when they attend COTR’s Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) Prayer Service, held shortly before the yearly examination. Invitations are sent out to the primary schools in the Morvant area, namely St. Dominic’s RC, Morvant Anglican, Chinapoo Government, Morvant New Government, Lower Morvant Government, and Hockett Baptist. Even though students from COTR’s congregation are invited, only those who attend the aforementioned schools are eligible for the grant.

The scholarship is then awarded to the student from each of the specified schools who achieves the highest Composite Standard Score in the SEA compared to their schoolmates who attended the Prayer Service. They receive this scholarship for the duration of their Secondary schooling, provided that they maintain an average grade of at least 70% during the school year. Students who do not maintain that grade are given an opportunity in the following year to have their scholarship reinstated.

While RESS began as a grant for Secondary School study between Forms 1-5, the need for it to be extended to those pursuing Sixth Form and tertiary-level education was recognised a few years ago and steps taken to fund such students. Several of the pupils who were assisted throughout their Secondary School career by RESS are now at university benefitting from this expansion, including one student who is studying at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Jamaica.

Church on The Rock delights to see young people excel. It has purposed to continue to support the students currently enrolled with RESS and assist many other students in the future
